Essential oils are becoming an increasingly popular choice for people who are looking toward natural options for enhanced well-being and ways to improve their home and office environments.
Chances are you have heard of essential oils, but you may not have a firm grasp on the best ways to use essential oils or how essential oils can help in your daily life. I often say that essential oils are complementary to what our amazing bodies already can accomplish.
I have put together an essential oil beginner’s guide below that provides you with tips on how to use essential oils.
(Note: Essential oils are a type of alternative medicine. It is not recommended that essential oils replace medicine. This information is for reference purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.)
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are the concentrated, volatile aromatic liquid obtained from the fruits, seeds, flowers, bark, stems, roots, leaves, nuts or other parts of a plant. Plants create essential oils naturally and store them in tiny molecular sacks.
There are many reasons that plants create essential oils, like attracting bees, repelling pests and protecting themselves from bacteria and fungi. These essential oils act as the defense mechanism and self-healing properties of the plant.
A true essential oil is one that has been grown in its indigenous area, is harvested at its peak time, properly distilled, and not tampered with or altered with in any way. Essential oils are an all-natural way to help with common symptoms and everyday concerns, as well as help balance your whole being.
Essential oil benefits and safety
Essential oils can help with regulating your immune system and emotions, support your respiratory system, ease nervous tension, and boost your energy levels. I find they help me relax and sleep soundly, and so much more.
Let’s touch on safety. When using essential oils topically or onto the skin, they should be diluted with a carrier oil first. This will “carry” the essential oil into the skin safely, as some essential oils are extremely potent. Always check your bottle of oil for a specific dilution recommendation. You should also avoid contact of essential oils with your eyes.
Diffusing essential oils can be quite powerful. If you plan to diffuse all day, I recommend diffusing for 30 minutes on and then 30 minutes off instead of keeping it on all day. After about 30 minutes, the essential oil has done its job. It’s also a good idea to diffuse in a well-ventilated area and make sure pets (especially cats) have the option to leave the room if they don’t like the aromas.
Even though essential oils are natural, you really don't want your toddler dumping it on the carpet, so keep the bottles tightly capped and out of reach. If you are pregnant or under a doctor’s care, be sure to consult your physician before using.
Ways to use essential oils
Some of the most popular essential oils have tons of different uses. Lavender oil helps promote sleep, relaxation, and encourages a peaceful, calm mindset. It can also help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scarring, help with pain associated with sunburns and bee stings, and it smells amazing.
Lemongrass essential oil is uplifting and helps support your immune health. Plus, it makes a great cleaning agent. I keep a bottle of lemongrass spray in my kitchen.
Eucalyptus oil is great for helping with congestion and respiratory health. It also helps ease discomfort from aches in your muscles and joints associated with aging. Eucalyptus also stimulates mental focus.
Tea tree oil helps remove odors. It has been used for many years to help treat problem skin, especially due to its antifungal properties. And like lemongrass, tea tree oil also makes a great cleaning agent. Tea tree oil also works well in the laundry to remove musty odors from towels and dishcloths.
Peppermint essential oil energizes and invigorates, helps with nausea, coughs and colds, head tension and pain, stimulates mental focus, and is cooling to the skin.
Sweet orange oil is made from the rind of the sweet orange and has a light, fresh, citrus fragrance that is uplifting, yet calming. It can improve your mood, relieve an upset stomach and also makes a great cleaning agent.
