Take care of yourself for a productivity boost

Self-care is an important part of staying physically and mentally healthy for working women, whether you are an entrepreneur or an employee. If you also have a family, you probably go to your second job at the end of your workday, which is taking care of your family.

When do you take care of yourself?

Very often we put the needs of our work, families and other people ahead of our own. In order to be able to do all the things you do, you must take care of yourself first. In fact, it's the only way you are going to have the energy and strength to move ahead.

It’s not selfish to take care of yourself

Let's talk about self-care. I think sometimes people get the words “selfish” and “self-care” confused. Self-care is not a reward (though sometimes that can be part of it); it's an essential part of succeeding in life and part of the process of being a human.

Recognize that it is not only okay, but necessary to take good care of yourself. Having a balanced life and engaging in good self-care practices actually makes you more productive, and gives you more clarity, energy and patience.

What is good self-care for you? Personally, I like to journal, meditate, go for walks, and daydream. I love to imagine my life the way I want it to be and feel like I am experiencing it now. You are unique, everyone is. It's important to ask what actions make you feel good.

Decide what works best for you

There are so many ways to take care of you. Perhaps you like to journal or text something nice to a friend. Maybe it’s spending time watching videos of puppies, kittens or something that makes you feel good. We all need those little mental breaks in our day.

It could be that you really enjoy kickboxing to release stress or some other type of exercise. It’s healthy to move our bodies in whatever way makes us feel good. It could be pillow fights or dancing like nobody is watching. Sometimes we need to put projects on the back burner and take a break. Taking little mini breaks throughout the day is a great idea.

Anyone can provide examples of how to provide good self-care, but ultimately you need to decide what makes you feel nourished and renewed. What helps you relieve stress and feel good may change from time to time. Life is a journey and we are always evolving.

Taking care of yourself starts with cultivating healthy habits to manage your stress and nurture yourself. Simple self-care measures include healthy eating, exercise, restful sleep, meditating or just taking time to pay attention to your breath, even for a few minutes.

Do what you enjoy

Simple is not the same as easy. We all know adopting a new habit can be a challenge. It's about consistency and commitment, so you can actually make changes in your daily routine. Self-care should not be just another thing you have to do, and you don’t have to change everything all at once. Just choose one thing that you can adopt and cultivate it into a habit, so it becomes part of you.

Life is busy, so do what you can. I like to do activities whenever I can fit them into my day. A few minutes here and there is easier than setting aside a longer time. This way it doesn’t feel like another thing on our “to-do” list and you won’t enjoy it.
